Oklahoma State no longer controls its own destiny.
Saturday’s 62-52 Bedlam loss not only ended the Cowboys’ hopes of a College Football Playoff appearance but also toughened their road to the Big 12 Championship Game.
Before Saturday, Oklahoma State could’ve won its final four games and made it to the conference title game regardless of the results of other Big 12 games. But now, the Cowboys need help.
Oklahoma State’s two losses have come against Oklahoma and TCU, the teams tied for first in the Big 12. The Sooners and Horned Frogs face Saturday, and regardless of the result, the Cowboys need to root for the loser to keep losing. To make the Big 12 title game, Oklahoma State needs first and foremost to win its three final games, as well as the loser of Oklahoma-TCU to lose at least one of its final two games. Because the two first-place teams both beat the Cowboys, they hold a tiebreaker over them.
Oklahoma State faces Iowa State on Saturday in Ames, Iowa, before home matchups with Kansas State and Kansas. It’s possible for the Cowboys to make the Big 12 title game despite losing one of those games, but it would require an extreme amount of chaos. The team focuses on “control what you can control,” and what the Cowboys can control is winning their final three games.
Beyond that, they need some help.
Oklahoma’s remaining schedule
If Oklahoma loses Saturday’s game against TCU, Oklahoma State can do what should be an easy task: root against the Sooners.
Oklahoma would need to lose one of its final two games for the Cowboys to finish in the top two in the conference. The Sooners face Kansas, which has yet to win a Big 12 game, on the road before ending the season at home against West Virginia. The Jayhawks beating Oklahoma would potentially be the largest upset in college football history, so the Cowboys’ hopes would likely rely on the Mountaineers.
West Virginia nearly beat TCU on the road in October, falling 31-24. That result provides reasons to believe the Mountaineers can beat the Sooners to put the Cowboys into the Big 12 title game.
TCU’s remaining schedule
If the Horned Frogs come up short against Oklahoma, the Cowboys need to root for them to do the same against Texas Tech or Baylor.
After the Sooners, TCU faces Texas Tech on the road before ending the regular season at home against Baylor. The Red Raiders have had an up-and-down season, watching several winnable games slip away. Upsetting the Horned Frogs could provide relevancy to their season while also potentially clinching them bowl eligibility.
Baylor, meanwhile, is 1-8, having earned its first victory under coach Matt Rhule against hapless Kansas. The matchup has grown into a heated rivalry, and upsetting TCU would not only put a cap on Rhule’s first season with the Bears but also propel Oklahoma State into the Big 12 title game.
Oklahoma State’s Big 12 title hopes rely on Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas and West Virginia. The odds are long, so the Cowboys will simply try to control what they can control and hope for the best from there.
