Defense defined Eddie Sutton era of Oklahoma State basketball. Mike Boynton is trying to make sure his era is remembered the same way.
The Cowboys have the word “defense” printed on the back of their practice shorts, The Tulsa World’s Mark Cooper reported. It’s something Sutton did during his tenure as Oklahoma State’s coach. Ahead of his first year at the Cowboys’ helm, Boynton visited with Sutton and decided his team should do the same with its shorts.
“That’s one of the ways he emphasized it every day,” Boynton told Cooper. “When I told him that I would think about doing it again, he lit up. And so we made that happen pretty quickly.”
Boynton is set to begin his first season as Oklahoma State’s coach Friday against Pepperdine. An assistant under Brad Underwood a year ago, Boynton will work to employ similar concepts. An efficient offense pushed the Cowboys into the NCAA Tournament. But the team’s defense was overaggressive in the early portion of Big 12 play and relaxed as the season went on. Boynton is hoping to find a middle ground this year.
The Cowboys have Jeffrey Carroll, the Big 12’s leading returning scorer, but lost three starters to graduation and the NBA. The loss of scoring will put extra pressure on Oklahoma State’s defense, and it’s clear Boynton is putting an emphasis on that side of the ball as a result.
