If the final College Football Playoff spot comes down to Ohio State or Alabama, Buckeyes fans may be the ones smiling in the end.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich went through a scenario where the final playoff spot would come down to the Buckeyes or the Crimson Tide.
- Clemson beats Miami; Clemson to CFP
- Oklahoma def. TCU; Oklahoma to CFP
- Georgia def. Auburn; UGA to CFP
- Ohio State def. Wisconsin
According to FiveThirtyEight, if all these results happen, Ohio State and Alabama would have almost the exact same percentage chance to make the four-team Playoff.
Dinich says Ohio State might have the edge.
“I love this because these numbers reflect exactly how close it’s going to be in that selection committee room,” Dinich said. “What happens now is Alabama’s resume comes under the microscope for those 13 people. Entering that Auburn game, it was 62nd in the country in strength of schedule. You look at Ohio State. Ohio State would be coming off a top-4 win against the only undefeated Power 5 team in the country remaining. That’s better than anything Alabama has on its current resume. Add to that, people forget they beat a ranked Penn State team, a ranked Michigan State team. Would that outweigh giving up 55 points to Iowa? Two losses? Just because you’re Alabama doesn’t mean you’re in. I think they would lean toward the Buckeyes.”
All this is of course speculation right now. Ohio State must take care of business first against unbeaten Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday.
