Ohio State WR Trevon Grimes, walk-on RB Mitch Rossi lose their black stripes

The latest Ohio State players to lose their black stripes are cornerback Trevon Grimes and walk-on running back Mitch Rossi, becoming the 13th and 14th freshmen to do so.

Rossi, who’s a Franklin, Tennessee, native, joined Ohio State this summer, while Grimes, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native, came to Columbus as a 4-star wide receiver prospect.

Grimes was a top-rated receiver prospect in the state of Florida who worked his way back from a season-ending injury he suffered during his senior season.

Rossi was a two-way player at Franklin High School, and also played Rugby. He gave a shout out to the other walk-on running backs at Ohio State when he got his stripe taken off.

Urban Meyer created the black stripe tradition when he was at Bowling Green. It’s a the ritual he uses in order to symbolize freshmen players as becoming a part of the team. Players lose their black stripes when they present themselves, on and off the field, in a way coaches find satisfactory.

Here’s a current list of the Ohio State players who lost their black stripes this summer:

  • RB J.K. Dobbins
  • DB Isaiah Pryor
  • DE Chase Young
  • CB Jeffrey Okudah
  • DT Haskell Garrett
  • LB Pete Werner
  • OT Thayor Munford
  • CB Shaun Wade
  • S Brandon White
  • QB Tate Martell
  • OL Wyatt Davis
  • DT Jerron Cage
  • LB Mitch Rossi

On the flip side, here are the other Buckeyes players who have yet to lose their black stripe since becoming a member of the team:

  • LB Baron Browning
  • OL Josh Myers
  • WR Jaylen Harris
  • CB Marcus Wlliamson
  • CB Amir Riep
  • DT Jerron Cage
  • OL Thayer Munford
  • LB Pete Werner
  • WR Elijah Gardner
  • K Blake Haubeil

This isn’t a knock on the other players by any means: in 2013, Ohio State freshman cornerback Eli Apple was the last player in that class to lose his black stripe. It certainly didn’t hold him back much, if at all, considering he’s a member of the New York Giants.
