Ohio State-Stanford women’s basketball preview

The Buckeyes and Cardinal will each begin their regular season with a top-10 matchup. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 5 and the Cardinal enter the game ranked No. 10. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, who coached in Columbus from 1980-85. She left Ohio State for Stanford, where she has coached since. VanDerveer helped pilot the Cardinal to national championships in 1990 and 1992.

The Kevin McGuff era at Ohio State has been building toward this season. All-American point guard Kelsey Mitchell is now a senior, and the Final Four will be hosted by Columbus this season. The Buckeyes have one of the most loaded rosters in the country, with several former high school All-Americans on the team. There’s also plenty of experience with nine letterwinners returning from the 2016 Big Ten title-winning team. The Buckeyes were picked to win the conference this year, too.

Last year the Buckeyes went 28-7 and made it to the Sweet 16 before losing to Notre Dame in an upset. Stanford finished with a 32-6 record and made it to the Final Four, where it lost to eventual champion South Carolina in the national semifinals.

McGuff has never beaten Stanford and VanDerveer in five previous attempts, but none of those came during his time in Columbus. He went 0-3 during his two years at Washington and also lost twice to the Cardinal while at Xavier. One of those losses at Xavier came in the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Tournament on a last-second shot.
