The Buckeyes will begin the Chris Holtmann era by taking on Robert Morris on Friday night. Holtmann was hired in June after Ohio State unexpectedly fired Thad Matta following a string underachieving seasons combined with player departures and recruiting misses.

Ohio State will be looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Over the last four years, the Buckeyes have just one NCAA Tournament win. Holtmann was hired to help change that, and he added a few players to give the Buckeyes some immediate help. Ohio native and 4-star recruit Kyle Young came with Holtmann from Butler, and Musa Jallow reclassified to the Class of 2017 and enrolled in college a year early. Additionally, the Buckeyes brought in Andrew Dakich, a walk-on graduate transfer from Michigan.

Here are three things to watch as the Buckeyes take on the Colonials in the season opener.

1. Keita Bates-Diop is back

A lot went wrong for the Buckeyes last season, perhaps none more than Keita Bates-Diop’s season-ending injury. The versatile forward opened last season by scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds against Navy, but a stress fracture in his left leg he sustained in the summer proved too much to play through and he was shut down for the season.

His return — and good health — gives the Buckeyes a big playmaker on both ends of the court. What will he look like after missing nearly a full year? Ohio State fans are about to find out.

2. Deep shooting

Ohio State had a miserable performance behind the arc in its exhibition win, making just 3 of 24 attempts from the 3-point line. Sophomore center Micah Potter said Wednesday that the Buckeyes had been great in practice during the preseason and attributed the poor showing more to preseason jitters than inaccuracy.

3. Style of play

With Holtmann making his coaching debut, all eyes will be on what the Buckeyes look like. The best thing Ohio State can do is play hard and be entertaining. Anything would be an improvement over the listless play of recent years, but fans are likely to be understanding of the depleted roster and more forgiving of losses if the Buckeyes are at least playing an entertaining style.
