Ohio State football’s recruiting showing no signs of slowing down

Welcome to another installment of Wake Up Sloopy, Land of 10’s daily morning column covering Ohio State athletics with beat writer Ryan Ginn. Here’s a look at what you might have missed on Thursday.

Two top recruiters

Ohio State has the nation’s No. 1 class for 2018, so it’s no surprise that ESPN thinks highly of the assistants landing those players.

Tom VanHaaren’s first ranking of the best recruiters among assistant coaches had two Buckeyes in the top three spots, including Greg Schiano at No. 1. Schiano’s work in the New York City area, where he landed top-60 players Matthew Jones and Jeremy Ruckert, played a big role in him landing the top spot.

Running backs coach Tony Alford was listed third, with 5-star running back Jaelen Gill being his top recruit.

Raekwon McMillan reportedly tears ACL

Three days after ascending to a starting role with the Miami Dolphins, it appears Raekwon McMillan could be lost for the season.

Playing in Miami’s first preseason game on Thursday night, McMillan was injured on a punt and reports later indicated that the Dolphins believe it’s an ACL tear.

Hours before the game, Ohio State linebackers coach Bill Davis spoke about why he believed McMillan was in for a special season. “The rest of the NFL, we tried to get the message out, I don’t think they knew how much it means to him and how he’s gonna do whatever it takes,” he said when asked about McMillan earning a spot on the first team. “He’s that special kind of guy.”

Playoff projection

Another day, another prediction of a College Football Playoff berth for Ohio State.

The forecast Thursday came from CBS Sports analyst Jerry Palm, who has the Buckeyes facing off against Southern California in the Rose Bowl.

Michigan, on the other hand, is projected to land in the Holiday Bowl.
