Notre Dame picks up commitment from 3-star CB Joe Wilkins Jr.

Joe Wilkins Jr. (North Fort Myers, FL / North Fort Myers HS) pledged his commitment to Notre Dame on Monday afternoon, per 247Sports’ Tom Loy.

His decision comes after an official visit to South Bend this past weekend to watch the Irish beat Wake Forest 48-37.

Wilkins, a 3-star prospect and the No. 109-ranked athlete according to 247Sports’ composite, plays cornerback and wide receiver for his high school team, but it appears that Notre Dame will utilize him on the defensive side of the ball.

“Wilkins is a lengthy defensive back with athletic traits,” said 247Sports recruiting analyst and film evaluator Clint Brewster. “As a corner, Wilkins can play the wide side and he really covers ground. He’s got good skills in man coverage with his ability to play the ball like a receiver. He’s very nimble for being a taller corner. Wilkins has the size and toughness to tackle in the run game and I like his competitiveness. He’s got the desire to win each play.

“Wilkins might not pop out to you like a five-star player does on film, but when you think about the vital aspects of the cornerback position, he checks all the boxes and more. I like his hips and ability to turn and run or change direction. Wilkins plays all over the field and returns kicks and punts, which really speaks to his athleticism. I think he’s a no-brainer for Notre Dame because he will be coached extremely hard and he won’t have to play right away.”

Wilkins becomes the 19th member of Notre Dame’s No. 9-ranked 2018 recruiting class. He chose the Irish over a plethora of competing offers, including Louisville, Michigan State, South Carolina, any many others.
