The path to the College Football Playoff appears pretty straightforward for Notre Dame: Keep winning, and they Fighting Irish should be in.
However, a projection by data analyst Stephen Oh for CBS Sports Sports suggests that might be easier said than done.
Oh’s model, which simulates game outcomes, was used to project the chances that each of the top 15 teams in the College Football Playoff rankings win all of their remaining regular season games. The projection gives Notre Dame just a 34.7 percent chance to do so.
Despite No. 3 Notre Dame’s relatively low chance to win out — No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Oklahoma all have higher likelihoods — the Irish are favored in each of their remaining games. The model gives Notre Dame a 58.8 percent chance to beat Miami this week, then a 91.1 percent chance to beat Navy and a 64.7 percent chance to close the season with a win at Stanford.
Essentially, if Notre Dame can survive its primetime showdown at Miami Saturday, its chances to finish the season 11-1 and almost certainly clinch a spot in the four-team Playoff field will improve dramatically.
