It’s never too early to start speculating who might take home the Naismith Award, college basketball’s Player of the Year trophy.
Thursday, the NCAA released a list of 50 players on the Nasmith Award Watch list. Notre Dame had two players make the list.
Senior forward Bonzie Colson and senior point guard Matt Farrell were both included on the watch list. Colson, already a preseason national player of the year pick by some, averaged 17.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season. Farrell averaged 14.1 points and 5.1 assists per contest.
The return of Colson and Farrell, two of the Irish’s leading scorers from last season, is one reason why some analysts have predicted Notre Dame could finally break through and make its first Final Four appearance under head coach Mike Brey. Notre Dame has seen its season end in the Elite Eight each of the past two seasons.
