Northwestern-Loyola basketball preview
The Wildcats begin their season on the heels of their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance where they went 24-12 overall and went to the Round of 32.
The best part? The Wildcats return their top three leading scorers.
Bryant McIntosh returns as the team’s leading scorer. In 2016-17, the 6-foot-3 senior guard averaged 14.8 points per game while also leading the team in assists with 5.2.
Right behind him was 6-foot-5 senior guard/forward Scottie Lindsey, who had 14.2 points per game.
Redshirt junior Vic Law, the team’s third-leading scorer returns as well after putting in 12.3 points per game last year. The 6-foot-7 forward was also second on the team in 3-point percentage at .399.
Leading rebounder Derek Pardon is back too, as the 6-foot-8 junior center pulled down 225 boards last season. Law was second with 210.
The Wildcats open with the Greyhounds, then have two more home games against St. Peter’s on Nov. 13 and against Creighton on Nov. 15.
They then travel to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut for the Hall ff Fame Tip-Off Tournament where they’ll face LaSalle then the winner or loser of Texas Tech/Boston College.
To round out their non-conference schedule, the Wildcats host Sacred Heart on Nov. 24 then travel to Georgia Tech on Nov. 28.
Coach Chris Collins spoke at Big Ten Media Day last month and addressed the fact that his team will be playing at Allstate Arena instead of it’s usual digs at Welsh-Ryan due to renovation.
He also talked about seniors like McIntosh, and Lindsey and how they’ve helped the team move on from last year’s successes and look forward.
“Their leadership has been vital,” Collins said. “The way they’ve approached the summer. We don’t talk about last year. There’s nothing to talk about. Every team is different. Every year is different,” he said.
“We know what our formula is and our guys know we have to have the same qualities if we want to be successful this year,” Collins said.
They Greyhounds, meanwhile, went 16-17 last year and played in the CBI. They return leading scorer Andrew Walker, who averaged 14.9 points per game last year.
