With Simi Shittu out of the picture for North Carolina, it looks like it’s Zion Williamson or bust for Roy Williams’ Class of 2018.
North Carolina seemingly has gone from out on Williamson, a 5-star small forward from Spartanburg, S.C., to a dark-horse contender after he somewhat unexpectedly took an official visit to Chapel Hill at the end of October.
Does that mean North Carolina is gaining ground on the nation’s No. 2 player? With Williamson, it’s hard to tell. He’s kept information close to the vest and just about every time there’s a bit of clarity in his recruitment, something changes and things go right back to their murky state.
It should come as no surprise, then, that just as North Carolina seemingly established a foothold, the situation seems to be changing again. According to Rivals’ Corey Evans, there are rumors that Williamson is now working to schedule a fifth and final official visit to Clemson, a school that was involved early but had seemingly dropped off since he last visited in September.
That leaves six schools in the hunt, adding Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and South Carolina to the Tar Heels and Clemson. According to Evans, it’s unclear when Williamson will make a decision, and even the schools recruiting him are uncertain what direction he may be leaning.
Tar Heels offer Anthony Harris
While the football Class of 2018 has gotten most of the attention of late with the addition of two commitments last week, coach Larry Fedora and his staff have been quietly plugging away on shaping the Class of 2019 recruiting board.
On Monday, that came in the form of an offer to unranked 2019 safety Anthony Harris, a teammate of 4-star Class of 2018 offensive tackle commit Avery Jones, according to Rivals’ Deana King.
Harris’ stock has risen quickly with offers from N.C. State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida State all coming since the start of his high school football season. While those are some significant suitors, the North Carolina offer is extra special for Harris.
“I really love UNC because it’s close to home,” Harris told King. “UNC has been my dream school for years and I’ve been working hard on the field to get an offer from them.”
Harris is a dynamic talent who can play on both sides of the ball. Recognizing that, North Carolina doesn’t appear to be recruiting him at a specific position, he told King. The junior is working to help bring Havelock, a No. 2 seed in the North Carolina 3-A state playoffs, a state championship. But once that’s complete, he said he would like to make his first trip to see North Carolina’s campus.
