Nick Saban already has a difficult task dealing with some of the injuries Alabama has on defense. On top of that, the coach’s banged up unit is facing a quarterback that he compares to one of the best ever.
Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald is guiding a team on a four-game winning streak and an offense that’s put up at least 34 points in all those victories as the Crimson Tide visit Starkville on Saturday.
During the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday, Saban likened Fitzgerald to a quarterback that gave him problems in the past.
“He makes a lot of plays, he’s got a lot of quarterback runs that he’s very, very effective at, sort of Tim Tebow-like in that regard, except I think the guy’s a very effective passer to go with that. He’s got a strong arm, he’s fairly accurate, he does a good job of managing their offense and getting the ball to the right guys.”
Saban said he already had a “tremendous amount of respect” when he faced him last season, and he certainly has more now.
Fitzgerald has definitely done some damage on the ground during the Bulldogs’ streak, running for at least 100 yards in all four games while posting 7 rushing TDs.
For the season, the junior is fourth in the SEC with 801 yards and his 6.9 yards per carry is second only to Arizona’s Khalil Tate among Power 5 quarterbacks.
