New Jersey columnist: Greg Schiano didn’t deserve ‘hateful Tennessee mob’ that wrecked his career

A New Jersey-based columnist came after what he called a “hateful Tennessee mob” in a huge way.

Tennessee’s reported hiring of Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano on Sunday and the wild events that followed, including the deal falling through, became a story that stretched far beyond the Volunteer State. On Monday, a column from NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi took the fans who protested Schiano to task. In doing so, Politi tried to shine a brighter light on the former Rutgers coach who played an integral part in Eric LeGrand’s inspirational story.

As part of the column, Politi called the Tennessee fans who protested Schiano’s reported hiring a “hate-filled mob.” He also suggested those Vols fans supposedly upset about Schiano’s alleged ties to the Jerry Sandusky situation at Penn State weren’t being honest.

Here’s more from the piece:

Let’s be clear on what this is really about. The people in Tennessee aren’t outraged about what Schiano might have witnessed a quarter century ago when he was a young assistant coach. They were furious over his middling 68-67 record as a head coach in Piscataway and his failed two-year tenure in charge of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If Schiano was a hot-shot coach headed for the national playoff, you really think those Tennessee fans are spray painting that rock? You think Clay Travis, the backward-thinking professional blowhard in SEC country, is really tweeting out the Tennessee athletic director’s cell phone number to the mob if Schiano was head coach of a top-10 team right now?

Of course not.

It’s impossible to group each Tennessee fan into one category. But it’s stunning how quickly fan angst ended the reported agreement between Schiano and Tennessee.

Were some Tennessee fans upset about the hiring after rumors about Jon Gruden, Dan Mullen and others? That’s likely. We all can agree this was an unusual situation, to say the least.
