New Florida coach Dan Mullen raised a few eyebrows Monday afternoon when he invoked the phrase “Champions of life,” famously used by former Tennessee coach Butch Jones after the Vols missed out on the SEC East title in 2016.

Mullen also said Monday he is going to “embrace” legendary Florida coach Steve Spurrier’s presence around the program. Trolling Tennessee in his opening press conference would be a fitting start to that relationship.
“I love ball and he loves ball,” Mullen said. “I went into his office today and he had game film up. We’ll have some great discussions.”
Mullen was officially hired in Gainesville Sunday after nine seasons as the head coach at Mississippi State. He previously served as the Gators’ offensive coordinator from 2005-2008, coaching the great Tim Tebow to a National Championship.
