Nebraska football: Work to do after close win over Arkansas State, Huskers in the NFL

Nebraska football is the No. 1 topic in Big Red Rising every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Huskers sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Huskers football, recruiting, basketball and more.

A close win

It was a closer win than many had hoped for, but Nebraska did get the victory over Arkansas State on Saturday. Quarterback Tanner Lee and the Huskers offense looked good, despite a few mistakes, in the 43-36 win. It was a bit of a different story on defense, but there’s no need to panic yet.

As for that muffed punt return that Arkansas State turned into a touchdown, Nebraska punter Caleb Lightbourn shared a bit more about what happened. And, of course, coach Mike Riley had some thoughts on the whole game.

Pro Big Red

NFL teams made their final cuts and decision over the weekend, unveiling their rosters. Former Huskers safety Nathan Gerry was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, was cut over the weekend but then signed to the Eagles’ practice squad.

Former Nebraska wide receiver Brandon Reilly also found a home on the Buffalo Bills practice squad, while former tight end Cethan Carter made the Cincinnati Bengals roster.

Middle of the road

Land of 10 writers ranked the Huskers at No. 8 in the first week of the Big Ten Power Poll. Considering Nebraska’s close win, it seems like the right place for now.

An exclusive club

Former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah started his Huskers career with a 100-yard kick off return. In similar fashion, JD Spielman started his career Saturday night with a 99-yard kick off return. Maybe it’s a sign.

Pack your bags

If Nebraska’s season ended Monday, the Huskers would be heading to the Taxslayer Bowl on Dec. 30. Confident enough to book a flight now?

No place like …

Nebraska football’s student section had a special banner made in support of Wendy Anderson, wife of Arkansas State  coach Blake Anderson. She underwent surgery last Tuesday after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and the Huskers students wanted to show they were thinking of her. Very cool move.
