Nebraska football is the No. 1 topic in Big Red Rising every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Huskers sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Huskers football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Leading the way

The Huskers named five captains over the weekend for the 2017 season. Tanner Lee, Joshua Kalu, Jerald Foster, Luke McNitt and Chris Weber all received the honor.

World champion

Former Nebraska wrestler Jordan Burroughs is a champion. Actually, make that a four-time world champion. Burroughs won his fourth World title on Saturday, beating Khetag Tsabolov in the 74 kg final. He is also a two-time undefeated NCAA champion and an Olympic gold medalist.

Stadium favorites

Many Nebraska fans love Runza and Valetino’s. How did the two become staples at Memorial Stadium every fall? The Omaha World-Herald’s Sarah Baker Hansen took a look at the duo and how they got where they are today in the Huskers’ world.

A recruiting update

Not a lot has changed on the Nebraska recruiting front over the last week. However, 5-star defensive end Micah Parsons still plans to visit Nebraska for the Wisconsin matchup on Oct. 7.

A dream come true

That’s what senior wide receiver Gabe Rahn said about his new scholarship. After walking on at Nebraska, he wasn’t sure the day would come. Last week, he was one of six Nebraska football players to receive the honor.

Seeing red

Nebraska will wear red on the road for the first time in 41 years when the Huskers face Oregon. That was the 1976 season opener. Nebraska and LSU tied 6-6. As for the rest of the season, the Huskers finished 9-3-1 and defeated Texas Tech in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl.
