The Nebraska Cornhuskers landed at No. 8 in Week 1 of Land of 10’s Big Ten Power Poll.
While the Huskers defeated Arkansas State 43-36 Saturday night, it was often too close for comfort. Nebraska’s offense had its struggles but showed promise as the night went on. Instead, it was the Huskers defense that left some panicking (but it might be too early for that).
Regardless, a win is a win. Nebraska got one against the Red Wolves on Saturday night but the Huskers will need a stronger performance in Week 2 at Oregon, especially from the Blackshirts.
The poll, released Sunday night, consisted of 13 voters — each of whom covers teams across the conference for our website.
Land of 10 Power Poll
1. Ohio State (10 No. 1 votes)…166 points
2. Penn State (3)…152
9. Michigan State…62
How I voted
I wanted to rank the Huskers higher. I really did. However, No. 8 was about as high as I could go after Week 1. Nebraska’s offense showed promise, but the defense struggled in defensive coordinator Bob Diaco’s new scheme. I hope the Blackshirts can get it figured out before next Saturday, because Oregon hung 77 points on Southern Utah.
As for the rest of the poll, I probably gave Michigan State more credit than deserved. To be fully transparent, I really didn’t know what to do with the Spartans, but their 35-10 defeat of Bowling Green bought them a little extra love from me. It may be temporary though.
In hindsight, if I could have flipped Michigan State with anyone, it would have been Maryland. The Terps looked good against No. 23 Texas, knocking the Longhorns off with a 51-41 upset. Maryland coach D.J. Durkin has to feel good about that, and his team should have been higher on my list.
Regardless, it’s Week 1. Some of the questions and uncertainties I had as I ranked teams this week will become more clear in Week 2. I’m specifically looking at you, Michigan State.
Here’s my full ballot for the poll this week:
1. Ohio State
3. Penn State
6. Michigan State
