Nebraska-Eastern Illinois basketball preview

Nebraska basketball comes into Saturday’s matchup as an 83.8 percent favorite, according to ESPN’s matchup predictor. While nagging injuries kept Glynn Watson Jr., Isaiah Roby and Anton Gill from playing in the Huskers’ exhibition game against Northwood, all three are expected to return in time to face Eastern Illinois.

The Huskers played two exhibition games this season, winning both. The first was a 76-72 victory over Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. The other victory came over Northwood at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb. Nebraska also had a secret scrimmage with Iowa State, which the Huskers won 92-84.

As for Eastern Illinois, the Panthers also played two exhibition games this season. Both games were at home at Lantz Arena. That included a 80-67 win over Illinois on Nov. 3, as well as a 95-92 loss to Southern Indiana.

Eastern Illinois has opened the regular season on the road five times in the last six years. Interestingly enough, this is also the third time in five years that the Panthers have opened the regular season against a Big Ten team. Eastern Illinois opened at Northwestern in 2013, and then at Indiana in 2015.

Although Nebraska defeated Northwood on Tuesday, there were still plenty of struggles. The Huskers specifically struggled at rebounding, which coach Tim Miles addressed after the win.

“You’re going to find out one way or another, and it’s better to win and find it out,” Miles said. “That’s got to be unacceptable to us. If you’re a Nebraska basketball player, you need to be tough-minded, and play your butt off, and anything less than that is just not acceptable. I can understand getting beat, but I don’t like being out-hustled.”

One area Nebraska will have to focus on against Eastern Illinois will be the 3-point shot. The Panthers set the school’s season-single record for 3-pointers last season, making 259 from behind the arc. Both Terrell Lewis and Montell Goodwin return for the 2017-18 season, and the duo ranks 23rd in the NCAA in combined 3-pointers (140) coming into this season. Eastern Illinois went 16-of-36 for 44 percent behind the arc in the two exhibition game.
