The latest College Football Playoff rankings are set to release on Tuesday evening and the Oklahoma Sooners will be among the handful of programs impacted the most.
The initial playoff rankings pegged the Sooners at No. 5, leaving Lincoln Riley’s program just one spot outside of where it ultimately needs to be. Oklahoma has since notched a double-digit 62-52 win over No. 11 Oklahoma State on the road in Bedlam, but that may not be enough to improve its placement in the playoff rankings.
No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Notre Dame each took care of business over the weekend, as did No. 4 Clemson, which SB Nation predicts will edge out Oklahoma for the fourth and final spot this week.
“Both beat ranked teams in road shootouts. Both also saw their schedules take dings; Clemson’s W over Virginia Tech is a little less impressive now, as is Oklahoma’s over Ohio State.”
“Clemson’s win over Auburn is still holding up well, and Clemson doesn’t have OU’s bunch of one-score wins against ehh teams. Also, the committee has verbally indicated it prefers teams with offense/defense balances; OU is about as imbalanced as you can get.”
The one-score wins against ‘ehh teams’ that SB Nation’s Jason Kirk noted came in the form of a 49-41 win over Baylor, a 29-24 victory over Texas and a 42-35 win over Kansas State. Being three teams with a combined record of 10-17 to date by just 20 total points doesn’t do Oklahoma many favors in an era where resumes reign supreme.
Nevertheless, Oklahoma is in the thick of a the playoff picture when it matters most and fresh off of a ranked win over the Pokes, the Sooners can make another statement in Week 11.
On Saturday, No. 8 TCU will come to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium for a Big 12 showdown with playoff and conference title implications at stake. Although Oklahoma doesn’t exactly control its destiny, it can do itself some favors by putting on a show in prime time on a national stage.
In the meantime, if SB Nation’s predictions prove true, the Sooners may have to wait until next week to see the fruits of their labors place then on the inside of the playoff picture down the stretch.
