Mississippi State football podcast: MSU defense steals the show in season opener

Welcome to More Cowbell, SEC Country’s daily podcast about Mississippi State   sports with host Brandon Walker.

There were several strong performances in Mississippi State’s season-opening win over Charleston Southern, but none stood out more than MSU’s defense. Led by defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, MSU’s defense recorded its first shutout since 2014 and allowed just 33 total yards. More Cowbell host Brandon Walker has reaction to that and everything else in this episode.

Led by Noxubee County product Jeffrey Simmons, MSU’s defense wreaked havoc all day, looking like an organized, aggressive unit for the first time since 2015. From Simmons to linebacker Leo Lewis to the electric debut of linebacker Willie Gay, we review the defense’s performance and discuss what comes next.

Offensively, MSU showed flashes but lacked the consistency of the defense. Still, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald showed improvement, 10 receivers caught passes and freshman running back Kylin Hill dazzled in his debut.
