Mississippi State will be without Chauncey Rivers for a while.
As relayed by The Clarion-Ledger’s Will Sammon on Saturday, Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen announced that the defensive end will take an academic redshirt. Sammon reported earlier in the week that Mississippi State was awaiting word from the NCAA on whether Rivers would be academically eligible.

Rivers, a former Georgia player, transferred to Mississippi State as part of last year’s class after spending time at East Mississippi Community College. Mississippi State had hoped Rivers would be a dynamic part of its defensive line this season. However, the loss means the Bulldogs must produce depth in other ways.
Mississippi State began its season with a 49-0 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday.
