Miami vs. Minnesota is one of the best games the Big Ten-ACC Challenge has to offer
Miami vs. Minnesota is one of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge’s premier games for 2017. Neither team has lost yet this season, though the Gophers almost fell to Alabama after the Tide were down to three players following a brawl that saw its entire bench get tossed, then had a player foul out, then had another get injured.
Miami’s in its most-hyped season in years. The Hurricanes are coming off an 86-65 win over North Florida, and are undefeated at 5-0. This will be the toughest test so far for each team, with Minnesota playing an easy early schedule consisting of USC Upstate, Niagara, Western Carolina, Alabama A&M and Massachusetts before that Alabama experience.
Amir Coffey is the Gophers’ most talented physical specimen, but Jordan Murphy, Nate Mason, Isaiah Washington, Reggie Lynch and Dupree McBrayer round out a talented group. Murphy’s been one of the most productive players in the nation so far this season. He’s No. 6 in KenPom’s Player of the Year Standings ahead of this game. Murphy is averaging 22 points per game, double what he put up last season. He also has the team’s best offensive rating, per KenPom, and pulls down a team-high 12 rebounds per game.
Miami returns most of its weapons from last season, and adds 5-star shooting guard Lonnie Walker. Walker hasn’t been a huge factor yet, but he hasn’t needed to be. Dewan Huell and Ja’Quan Newton have been the Hurricanes’ most effective players from the field, with Bruce Brown also helping out. Huell has made steady improvements in his sophomore season to keep the Canes thriving while Brown attempts to rediscover his shot. Brown’s shooting percentages from inside and outside the arc are down, and his true shooting percentage is down from 55 last year to 43 this season.
This is Minnesota’s biggest game until Dec. 9, when the Gophers play Arkansas on the road. In between, Minnesota will participate in the Big Ten’s new December conference play, hosting Rutgers on Sunday before traveling to play Nebraska on Tuesday.
