Mike Gundy announced last night that he’d be staying in Stillwater, to cheers of joy from Oklahoma State fans and groans from Tennessee fans who were spurned.
In a Q&A with Bleacher Report’s Adam Kramer, Gundy detailed why he chose to stay at Oklahoma State, and why he’s probably never leaving.
“Those are the things you worry about as a coach,” said Gundy of the changes moving would make in the lives of his children. “How many times am I going to move? Will my kids adjust in school? All of that is over with for me. Now I can devote my time to my family and my team, and that is very comforting.”
Tennessee offered Gundy the world, and he turned them down. He didn’t turn them down because they didn’t offer enough, he did it out of a sense of loyalty. In a coaching landscape marked by ever more prevalent coaching mercenaries, Gundy can absolutely be admired for his conviction and commitment to his community. He isn’t just the head coach of Oklahoma State, he is Oklahoma State.
