Michigan State recruiting: Top performances from Spartans commits this weekend

The high school football season has kicked off, and that means Michigan State commits are in action. Check Land of 10 every Sunday as we spotlight the top performances of future Spartans.

It was Week 3 for some, Week 2 for many, and Week 1 for a few. It all coincided with the first college football weekend. For those who found themselves too engrossed with Michigan State’s season opener against Bowling Green, we’ve got five notable performances from Spartans commits for you.

QB  Theo Day

High school: Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child
Class: 2018
The skinny: In no way did Theo Day have his best performance Thursday against East Lansing (Mich.), a short walk from his future home. He said it. His coaches said it. But he still threw for 172 yards, ran for 40 and scored all 3 of Divine Child’s touchdowns, throwing for 1 and running for 2  to seal a 20-17 win.

WR  Javez Alexander

High school: Sandusky (Ohio)
Class: 2018
The skinny: Javez Alexander, who will likely play wide receiver in college, still handles quarterbacking duties for Sandusky. On Friday, he threw for 122 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 97 yards and another score, per the Sandusky Register. He also picked off a pass for the second week in a row. His efforts led to a 35-13 win.

DE Parks Gissinger

High school: Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.)
Class: 2018
The skinny: This will come as a welcome sign for Michigan State fans. On Thursday against one of the nation’s best teams in Mountain Pointe (Phoenix), Parks Gissinger recorded a sack to help the Eagles win 39-25, according to the L.A. Daily News. That’s as many sacks as Michigan State’s unproven pass rush recorded in the season opener.

DB Michael Dowell

High school: St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio)
Class: 2018
The skinny: Michigan State found itself on the wrong end of some loose balls Saturday, losing three fumbles. The night before, Michael Dowell was on the right side, scooping up a blocked punt and taking it down to the 21-yard line, per Cleveland.com. The Eagles scored a touchdown soon after to make it 14-0. They would eventually win 41-6.

TE Trenton Gillison and DB Xavier Henderson

High school: Pickerington (Ohio) Central
Class: 2018
Four-star teammates (per the 247Sports composite ratings) and Michigan State commits Trenton Gillison and Xavier Henderson deserve joint honors for helping Ohio’s top team to a 25-20 win over Indianapolis Cathedral. They combined for 5 of the Tigers’ 9 catches and 80 of the team’s 108 receiving yards, per the Indianapolis Star. Henderson also carried twice for 16 yards.
