Michigan State recruiting: Latest updates on Spartans’ next class

Basketball dominated recruiting this week for Michigan State. When the early signing period kicked off on Wednesday, the Spartans announced a large five-player class.

That’s pretty typical. Coach Tom Izzo and his staff inked their entire 2017 time during the early period as well. But for the first time, the Michigan State football team will have the opportunity to do the same. From Dec. 20-22, the first early signing period for Division I football will be held.

Coach Mark Dantonio expects all of his current commits to sign when that period comes around. And there might be some new names ready to put pen to paper as well. So let’s take our weekly look at where things stand and where they’re headed.

Where the Michigan State recruiting class ranks

Michigan State’s 18-player 2018 class ranks No. 30 in the nation and No. 5 in the Big Ten, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Four members of the class carry 4-star ratings.

Latest Michigan State recruiting news

Michigan State hosted a talented crop of recruits for its win over Penn State, several of whom shared their experience. Additionally, Izzo introduced his five new players to the fan base. These are the headlines.

Michigan State 2018 commits

5 top uncommitted 2018 targets

4-star WR Tommy Bush, Samuel Clemens (Schertz, Texas)

Bush’s recruitment has grown to the point he has approximately 50 offers. Michigan State became one of the first to offer in January. The next step was getting Bush on campus, and the Spartans did so for the weekend of the Penn State game. They will battle teams like Nebraska and in-state programs Baylor and Texas for the 6-foot-5 standout, who would be a massive pickup.

3-star DT Jackson Cravens, Timpview (Provo, Utah)

Michigan State has already brought in Cravens for an official visit, but he’s in no rush to come to a decision. He still has four other official visits to take, with Georgia, Utah and Washington among the possibilities. Michigan State hopes his relationship with cousin and Spartans TE/DE Mufi Hill-Hunt will help draw him to East Lansing.

4-star CB Kalon Gervin, Detroit Cass Tech

This is why coaches keep relationships going even after prospects have committed to other schools. It worked with Antjuan Simmons, now a Michigan State freshman linebacker, and the Spartans hope it will pay off with Gervin, another in-state prospect. They don’t have a particularly huge need for another defensive back, but he’s the type of player for whom you make room. He plans to announce his decision on Dec. 2.

3-star WR Shocky Jacques-Louis, Dunbar (Fort Myers, Fla.)

Michigan State brought in the elusive Tennessee commit for an official visit over the weekend, and it hopes to capitalize on the unconvincing job status of Volunteers coach Butch Jones. On offense, wide receiver seems to be the most vital remaining need as the Spartans look to add a third to join Alexander and Major.

3-star DT Dashaun Mallory, Bolingbrook (Ill.)

Mallory loves Michigan State. That much is certain. Though Mallory is projected as a tackle, Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton has spoken with him about a hybrid role. Either way, he would be a solid pickup, but some hoops still need to be jumped through before a decision can be made.
