Michigan-North Florida preview

Michigan breezed past Division II Grand Valley 82-50 in its lone exhibition game last Nov. 3, and now embarks on the regular season by hosting North Florida (0-1) of the Atlantic Sun Conference. This is the first of three games in six days for the Wolverines, all at home.

Michigan will take all the live action it can get as it attempts to weave a host of newcomers into a lineup that returns starters Moe Wagner and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman. Forward Duncan Robinson and point guard Zavier Simpson were reserves last season but are expected to step into starting roles along with sophomore wing Charles Matthews, who sat out last season after transferring from Kentucky. Matthews played 29 minutes, scoring 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting against Grand Valley State.

Michigan coach John Beilein will get a good opportunity in first week of the season to evaluate who will be able to provide what roles for the rest of the season.

Simpson started against Grand Valley State but there will be an on-going battle for the point guard spot with grad transfer Jaaron Simmons and freshman Eli Brooks also in the mix. Simpson played 8.7 minutes a game last season as the backup to Derrick Walton Jr. He has the most experience in Beilein’s complex offensive system that requires constant ball and player movement. Simmons was a first-team All-MAC selection at Ohio last season. Brooks is part of a three-player recruit class along with guard Jordan Poole and power forward Isaiah Livers.

Poole played at prep powerhouse La Lumiere School in Indiana, and Livers was Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan at Kalamazoo Central.

Beilein has emphasized that he wants Michigan to be more physical this season, especially in the rebounding department. Wagner went through the NBA Draft evaluation process last spring before deciding to come back to Michigan. One of his goals this season is to become a stronger, consistent presence inside. He had 10 rebounds against Grand Valley State to go along with 10 points.

North Florida finished last season 15-19 but won a pair of road games to reach the A-Sun title game, where it lost to Florida Gulf Coast. The Ospreys are expected to start five sophomores: guards Ivan Gandia-Rosa and JT Escobar, wing Garrett Sams, and forwards Wajid Aminu and Noah Horchler. Sams averaged 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season while making 42 percent of his 3-point attempts. Aminu averaged 9.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

This is the Osprey’s second game in two nights; it opened the season on Friday with a 98-66 loss at No. 2 Michigan State.

This is the first meeting between the two teams. The game is part of the Maui on the Mainland tournament, a prelude to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational that will be played in Hawaii later this month.
