Michigan-North Carolina preview

Michigan faces a ranked opponent for the first time, and doing it on the road against the defending national champions makes the test even greater for a Wolverines team looking for its fourth win in a row. While they are averaging 78.7 points per game, North Carolina is scoring 84.8 points per game even after being held to 45 points by Michigan State on Sunday. The Tar Heels made just 24.6 percent of their shots in the loss to MSU, including only 1-of-18 from 3-point range.

Michigan has four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Charles Matthews with 17.7 points per game. Junior forward Moe Wagner has had three double-doubles already this season. He is second in scoring (15.3) and leads the team in rebounding with 8.6 per game. Senior forward Duncan Robinson is shooting 40.4 percent on 3-point attempts while averaging 13.0 points. Senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur Rahkman is averaging 11.0 points per game and has 27 assists compared to just 2 turnovers this season.

The Wolverines have done a good job of taking care of the basketball this season, averaging just over 9 turnovers per game as a team while forcing 14.3 turnovers from their opponents. North Carolina is averaging 12.6 turnovers per game.

Junior forward Luke Maye leads the Tar Heels in scoring (19.0) and rebounding (10.0). Senior guard Joel Berry (15.0), senior forward Theo Pinson (11.2), and junior guard Kenny Williams (14.0) are also averaging double figures for North Carolina.

Michigan and North Carolina haven’t faced each other since the Tar Heels beat the Wolverines, 77-71, in the 1993 NCAA national title game. Coach John Beilein has been coaching in college for 40 seasons but this will be just his second game against UNC.

“You would be talking about my 0-for-record against North Carolina right now?” Beilein quipped during a press conference on Tuesday.
