TE Michael Irvin II moves atop Miami depth chart in wake of Christopher Herndon’s injury

Michael Irvin II has as strong a legacy as anyone on this year’s Miami roster. The Hurricanes will be counting on the sophomore more than ever Saturday. The latest Miami depth chart, sent out Tuesday, includes the son of former Hurricanes wide receiver Michael Irvin as the Hurricanes’ new starting tight end.

Irvin technically made one start this season, although he more frequently went through a game without a catch than he did make a meaningful contribution. The pass-catcher spent most of the season backing up All-ACC tight end Christopher Herndon, who suffered a season-ending injury during Miami’s 24-14 loss Friday in Pittsburgh. Irvin’s first week as a true starter for the No. 7 Hurricanes comes ahead of Miami’s biggest game in more than a decade – the ACC Championship Game against No. 1 Clemson in Charlotte. Scatt Patchan and Brian Polendey will be Irvin’s co-backups at Bank of America Stadium.

Irvin is the only new starter for the Hurricanes this week, although Miami did shuffle the reserves at a couple other spots. Athlete DeeJay Dallas is now officially Miami’s backup running back behind Travis Homer, a role he had effectively been filling for the past month. Homer is also no longer a co-starter at kick returner. Wide receiver Jeff Thomas, who had also effectively taken over the role, is now listed as the lone starter with Dallas as his backup, and Homer and defensive back Malek Young splitting third-string duties.
