Maryland-Purdue basketball preview

Maryland (6-2) is coming off a 72-70 loss to Syracuse, which was their second loss in three games. The Terps didn’t lose their second game until Jan. 1 last season.

Sophomore guard Kevin Huerter led Maryland with 23 points in the loss, with much of his production coming from behind the arc; he shot 7-for-9 from behind the arc, tying a career high. Freshman Bruno Fernando chipped in with 13 points in 19 minutes, while sophomore Anthony Cowan recorded 11 points and four assists.

Syracuse sophomore guard Tyus Battle hit a three-pointer with 0:59 seconds remaining to give the Orange the lead. Battle finished with 18 points.

“Our spacing wasn’t good,” Turgeon told reporters afterward. “The whole time you’re saying, ‘Hey guys, get Kevin a shot,’ because he was making almost all of them. We couldn’t seem to do that … We were scrambling.”

Maryland will look for greater offensive balance against Purdue (6-2) in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Boilermakers, however have held each of their past two opponents — Arizona and Louisville — to under 65 points.
The teams played last season Feb. 4, when Purdue won a thriller, 73-72, in College Park. Caleb Swanigan, now a forward for the Portland Trailblazers, paced the Boilermarkers with 26 points in addition to recording 10 rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Carsen Edwards made two free-throws with 2.1 seconds left to seal then-No. 23 Purdue’s win over then-No. 17 Maryland.
The Terps and Boilermarkers split their season series in 2015-’16, with Maryland picking up a 72-61 win at home on Feb. 6, before Purdue evened the score on Feb. 27., when the Boilermakers earned an 83-79 win.
The contest begins a streak for Maryland during which the Terps will play seven of eight games at home. Maryland were 13-5 at home last season, after two straight campaigns of losing just one game in front of its home fans. Purdue, meanwhile, returns home for a three-game set after the Maryland game. Then after hitting the road to play at Butler, the Boilermakers will play another three games in front of their home fans.
Edwards is averaging a team-high 17.4 points in addition to averaging 4.3 assists. Vincent Edwards, who was named a member of the All-Big Ten third-team last season, leads Purdue with 8.8 rebounds per game.
Cowan (14.8 points), Huerter (12.3 points) and Fernando (10.8 points) are the Terps’ three leading scorers.
