Mad Dog on Greg Schiano backlash: Tennessee fans don’t know anything about football

Tennessee fans certainly made their voices heard when it started to become clear that Greg Schiano was poised to become the school’s next coach, and sports radio host Mad Dog made his loud and clear from the other side of the coin.

Mad Dog spoke with Outkick the Coverage’s Clay Travis, a Tennessee fan, in what became a heated argument about Schiano and his potential fit at Tennessee.

Travis argued that Schiano would be “a mediocre hire for Tennessee,” which Mad Dog clearly didn’t agree with.

“Let’s examine Schiano’s record, because the Tennessee football fan knows nothing about Schiano,” Mad Dog started. “He was coaching Rutgers when I was in New York covering New York sports. I went to a million Rutgers games, and I know a lot about Schiano’s career. Schiano’s a helluva coach.

Now to win at Rugers is impossible. He won 68 games there, they went to a million bowl games, he put that program on the map, he got the extension built for the stadium, they were top 10 in the country, they got on national TV. You may not like him, personality-wise and everything else, but for the Tennessee football fan, who knows nothing about football … Clay, what do you guys know about Greg Schiano at Rutgers? You know nothing. What do you know?”

Travis then went on to point out that three of the top markets for viewership in college football every year are Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis, but that didn’t do anything to convince Mad Dog that the Volunteer State was educated in the sport.

“That doesn’t mean anything,” Mad Dog said. “What? Because you watch you know football?”

The two sparred long after that with Travis questioning why Schiano isn’t getting interest from several other head coaching vacancies, and Mad Dog responded with Schiano’s track record in the NFL and as a defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

This certainly goes down as one of the more epic back-and-forths between media personalities in a while.
