LSU Tigers podcast: Is this 3-star 2018 commit the next Tyrann Mathieu?

Welcome to  One Team, One Podcast, SEC Country’s daily LSU football podcast with your host Carter “The Power” Bryant. We are joined in this episode by SEC Country’s Sam Spiegelman to chat the 2018 Tigers recruiting class, which features a defensive back that resembles the legendary Tyrann Mathieu.

Here is a rundown of episode 3 of One Team, One Podcast:

Louisiana Top 30 offense

Spiegelman chats the methodology behind his  Louisiana’s Top 30 2018 prospect rankings.

The first player discussed is quarterback Justin Rogers, the lone quarterback in Spiegelman’s Top 30. Rogers is a TCU commit, but the Tigers remain in contention. The transfer of Lindsey Scott increases the importance of quarterback depth.

LSU also needs to increase depth at receiver with the eventual departure of DJ Chark. The only 5-star prospect in Louisiana Terrace Marshall is Spiegelman’s No. 1 prospect and would fill a major need. Marshall is a teammate of Rogers at Parkway High School in Bossier City, La.

Is Ar’Darius Washington the next Tyrann Mathieu?

There will never be another Honey Badger. However, Washington has the potential to come close.

Washington is a 3-star defensive back at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La. Evangel has a history of producing hidden gems, including LSU’s Jacob Hester and Arkansas’ Jared Cornelius.

Spiegelman says the Mathieu comparison make sense, citing multiple occasions where Washington outshined other highly touted prospects in big games. He will have competition in Baton Rouge’s “DBU” culture, but look for him to eventually to become a contributor for the Tigers.

True freshman contributors in 2018

Spiegelman breaks down what he has learned from attending LSU’s practices and speaking to his sources. He addresses the hype surrounding true freshman linebacker Jacob Phillips and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire as immediate contributors.

Danny Etling named starter

Bryant begins the show discussing the official announcement of Etling as the starting quarterback. He dives into why it’s a blessing that true freshman Myles Brennan did not win the job.
