Welcome to One Team, One Podcast, SEC Country’s daily LSU football podcast with your host Carter “The Power” Bryant. We are joined in this episode by MasseyRatings.com’s Kenneth Massey to discuss his preseason ranking of LSU at No. 3.
Here is a rundown of the fifth episode of One Team, One Podcast:
LSU can make the College Football Playoff
The Tigers have enough raw talent to be in contention for the College Football Playoff. However, the task will be tough with only three conference home games and a healthy portion of last year’s production gone.
How the preseason pollsters view the Tigers varies.
LSU is ranked No. 13 in the first installment of the AP Top 25. Alabama (No. 1) and Auburn (No. 12) are the only SEC schools ranked higher.
Earlier this week on the show, SEC Country’s Alex Hickey says that is a fair ranking. Bryant breaks down why the poll is flawed.
Massey Rating has Tigers at No. 3
College football writer Matt Hinton released a consensus Top 25 earlier this month. It slotted LSU at No. 11 and Auburn at No. 10.
The most interesting poll included in Hinton’s aggregate was the Massey Rating. Massey had LSU at No. 3 and Auburn No. 18, which is highest and lowest ranking of each school in any Top 25.
Surprisingly, Massey doesn’t watch much football. His ratings are entirely numbers-based. He dives into deeper detail of why LSU is so high compared to other polls in Hinton’s consensus Top 25, which have the Tigers no higher than No. 9.
Massey also goes into history of LSU in his ranking system and if his preseason polls have any correlation to teams winning national championships.
Bryant has yet to make a prediction in LSU’s opener against BYU. The Tigers are a double-digit point favorite and he contemplates putting some money on the Cougars.
