LSU outside linebacker Arden Key still not cleared for contact

BATON ROUGE, La. — There is at least one bit of good news for the Chattanooga football team this week: the Mocs probably won’t be facing superstar LSU outside linebacker Arden Key.

Tigers coach Ed Orgeron confirmed during his Tuesday press conference that Key still has not been cleared for full-contact practice.

“Arden is still waiting to be cleared for contact,” Orgeron said. “He’ll get a little more today as far as repetitions.”

There appears to be no hurry to get Key back in the fold, at least not with the FCS-level Mocs the next team up on the schedule.

“We’re going to bring him back slowly,” Orgeron said. “But he’s not been cleared to play and he’s not ready yet.”

Last season Key tied LSU’s single-season sacks record with 12. He is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, a procedure he underwent following a “leave of absence” from the program during the spring semester.

Sci Martin to return to practice

One of Key’s potential replacements at outside linebacker will be back in the fold Tuesday. Sci Martin will return to practice, Orgeron confirmed.

Martin was one of 13 LSU players who were absent for the season opener, and one of three that weren’t at practice Monday.

Martin is needed with fellow outside linebacker Andre Anthony out due to injury. Only two players were available at Key’s position against BYU — Ray Thornton and K’Lavon Chaisson.

Dee Anderson still out with injury

Wide receiver Dee Anderson is another of the 13 Tigers who weren’t dressed for the opener, though Orgeron indicated it is due to health rather than behavior.

“He has been out all camp. He has not practiced one time all camp. He’s out with an injury,” Orgeron said. “I was hoping he would be back this week.”

Anderson is one of the most promising targets in the Tigers receiving corps. The sophomore from DeSoto, Texas is 6-foot-6 and 223 pounds.
