BATON ROUGE, La. — Preseason All-American outside linebacker Arden Key returned to practice when the LSU football team took the field Wednesday afternoon.
Key, who has been in-and-out of LSU’s practices this fall while rehabbing his offseason shoulder surgery, was wearing a limited, non-contact gold jersey during practice but wasn’t wearing a visible brace of any kind to secure the shoulder. The media viewing period doesn’t not include any points where LSU does team drills, so there’s no way of knowing whether or not Key was involved in contact drills, but the gold jersey seems to indicate no.
The junior edge defender met with a doctor earlier this week to determine his availability for the Tigers’ season opener against BYU on Sept. 2. Both LSU football coach Ed Orgeron and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda have said they are preparing for the game assuming the school’s single-season sack leader will not be available.
Redshirt freshmen Ray Thornton and Andre Anthony and true freshman K’Lavon Chaisson will play in Key’s stead. Anthony returned to practice for the second straight day Wednesday after missing about a week previously with an undefined injury.
Derrius Guice still out
While Key was back practicing, fellow preseason All-American Derrius Guice was not. Guice had wisdom teeth surgery earlier in the week and has not practiced since the Tigers’ Saturday scrimmage as a result.
While Guice is out, senior Darrel Williams is leading LSU’s running back group, followed by junior Nick Brossette and freshman Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Previously-injured back Lanard Fournette also returned to practice Wednesday and rejoined the rotation of ball-carriers.
Other injury notes
Here’s a list of additional players who returned from injury, or who are still injured:
- Offensive guard Donovaughn Campbell returned after missing a few days, but was wearing a non-contact gold jersey. Freshman offensive tackle Austin Deculus was also in gold.
- Wide receiver Dee Anderson and edge rusher Sci Martin continued their streak of missed practices Wednesday. Freshman fullback Tory Carter joined the list of players who were not at practice.
