LSU football is the No. 1 topic of discussion every day on SEC Country’s One Team, One Podcast. Your host Carter “The Power” Bryant discusses in this episode why the Tigers had the best opening week of any team in the SEC, including Alabama.
LSU defeated BYU 27-0 in New Orleans on Saturday. The game was originally set to be played in Houston’s NRG Stadium, but was moved due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Donate to relief efforts by visiting RedCross.org.
LSU had a better week 1 than Alabama
Bryant states Alabama has college football’s most impressive victory thus far, a methodical 24-7 win over then-No. 3 Florida State. However, a win against the Seminoles doesn’t guarantee the Crimson Tide’s week overall was the best. Nick Saban lost two linebackers for the season and quarterback Jalen Hurts proved again he can’t beat elite defenses through the air.
LSU learned how dominant it can be on both sides of the ball. Sure, the Tigers’ win came against mediocre BYU. However, the growth and depth of its players looked magnificent.
The Tigers also suffered no wounds against BYU. Heisman candidate Derrius Guice was able to rest in the second half while quarterback Danny Etling did not get touched.
The most important thing is LSU will be best prepared schematically against every team on the schedule. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda should have the upper hand in almost every matchup this season and can match wits with Saban’s staff. This is a refreshing change from the Les Miles regime.
Tigers jump in the AP poll
LSU’s dominant effort against BYU leapfrogged them past Auburn to No. 12 in the AP poll. The Bayou Bengals stayed put at No. 12 in the USA Today Sports Amway Coaches Poll. Bryant reacts to both rankings.
Brumfield, Paris and White Honored
Bryant discusses the weekly awards and honors given to offensive guard Garrett Brumfield, defensive back Ed Paris and linebacker Devin White.
