It’s been a frustrating season for Louisville cornerback Jaire Alexander.
Alexander, a preseason all-American, has appeared in just two games this season for the Cardinals. He hasn’t finished either.
Alexander injured his knee while trying to run back a blocked kick in Louisville’s season-opener against Purdue. The injury was initially feared to be a ligament tear, but proved to be just a sprain. Alexander returned but saw limited action in the Cardinals’ Week 6 loss to N.C. State.
Then, in practice the following week, Alexander broke his hand. He hasn’t played since.
The good news for Louisville fans is that Alexander spoke on the Bobby Petrino Radio Show on Louisville’s WHAS Wednesday night and said he’s “feeling great.”
“I’m feeling the best I have felt,” Alexander said, according to the Cardinal Sports website. “This bye week has really helped me as far as recovery and I am ready to go out there and go get it.”
Earlier in the week, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported that Petrino said Alexander has been practicing this week with a non-contact jersey on and that he will “have the opportunity to play” in Louisville’s Week 11 game against Virginia, but that the team would monitor his status leading up to the game.
Alexander’s comments suggest that he plans to suit up against the Cavaliers.
Louisville has dearly missed Alexander’s presence in the secondary. The Cardinals rank 105th in the FBS against the pass, allowing 259 yards per game through the air. In the team’s last game, a 42-32 loss to Wake Forest, Louisville allowed Demon Deacons quarterback John Wolford to throw for 461 yards.
Alexander said the hardest part of being injured has been watching his team struggle without him.
“Seeing them go through the grind and me not being out there, it really hurt at times,” Alexander said. “But special thanks to the training staff and my teammates who supported me through this long journey of recovery. And I’m happy to be back out there.”
