GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Jim McElwain is speaking with media. A recap from the scrimmage on Friday and an update on the quarterback race should highlight McElwain’s final press conference before the team shifts its attention to the Sept. 2 season opener against Michigan.

Here are the highlights:

  • Updates on the scrimmage: “We actually got a few more reps than we thought.” McElwain said they were hoping for about 85 plays, not including special teams. They had about 100 plays. “I thought it was really good and I’m excited about those young DBs. They’re going to get challenged. … I’m excited about kind of what they’ve done.” McElwain added that the nickel and dime spots seem to be locked up by Marco Wilson and Donovan Stiner, respectively. Also praised Shawn Davis for his work at safety.
  • “Chauncey has been playing safety partially with Nick [Washington] out.” McElwain said Washington will play, but his injuries have made it tough to determine how much and when.
  • Defensive line: McElwain likes Kyree Campbell and said the “bang-bang boys” of TJ Slaton and Elijah Conliffe have impressed. McElwain said Taven Bryan was a “slow starter” in camp but has improved since.
  • “On offense, Tez is OK to go. We’re going to have to manage that like we did our freshman year. He’ll be ready to go for us.” Fred Johnson and Tyler Jordan have also played left tackle at points.
  • “Receiver rotation wise, we’re sitting around there at 8 or 9. Obviously, getting them in the right position” is key.
  • McElwain said “We’re still working against ourselves. We haven’t gotten into Michigan yet. When you get their roster, let us know.”
  • McElwain on the QB battle: “you’re going to see a bunch of them out there. … I’m not naming a starter” yet
  • More on the QBs: “Will all of them play? I don’t know yet. Will two of them play? I don’t know yet. Don’t read too much into this as we’re not happy with where we’re at. It’s more so the competition has brought out some really good things.”
  • Injuries: TE Kemore Gamble (foot; will get looked at again); DB CJ McWilliams and LB Kylan Johnson are still out; Ivey is limited; Safety Quincy Lenton is back; S Jeawon Taylor “is a guy that will be playing on Saturday down the road when we get to that game.” CB Joseph Putu  has a minor hamstring injury, so “he’ll be held out today.”
