Kirk Herbstreit on Wisconsin: ‘Don’t reward them just because they’re undefeated’

Wisconsin moved up one spot to No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night.

Moving up is good news for the Badgers, as is the chance to finally play a ranked opponent. Wisconsin faces Iowa — which entered the rankings at No. 20 — on Saturday in Madison.

Still, the question remains: Could Wisconsin go undefeated, win the Big Ten and still get held out of the top 4?

It’s a possibility Kirk Herbstreit discussed during the College Football Playoff rankings show on ESPN. While the Badgers face a ranked opponent this weekend, they might not get through the season with a game against a top-10 team. Michigan State and Ohio State, one of which will almost certainly face the Badgers in the Big Ten title game, were ranked 12th and 13th, respectively, in the latest rankings.

It wouldn’t be a stretch for the selection committee to keep the Badgers out of the playoff if other top teams keep winning, according to Herbstreit.

“People still think teams qualify for this if they win a conference championship — that’s why they get so frustrated and so emotional,” Herbstreit said. “This isn’t little league where everyone gets a trophy. This is about putting the best 4 teams in. And if you think Wisconsin, at the end of the dance, is one of the best 4 no matter who they play, then put them in. But don’t reward them just because they’re undefeated. To me, that’s silly.”

Wisconsin can get to 10-0 with a win over the Hawkeyes this Saturday.
