There are surprise teams every college football season. And on Wednesday, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit revealed five teams that he thinks have the potential to be just that in 2017.
Get excited, Missouri fans, because Herbie has picked the Tigers to be the surprise team from the SEC.
Along with Mizzou, Herbie has Texas, North Carolina State, Notre Dame and Wyoming as his surprise teams for this season.
This pick was a little more surprising than Herbstreit’s College Football Playoff picks, as Mizzou is coming off a 4-8 season in its first year under coach Barry Odom. The Tigers have won just three SEC games over the past two seasons, including only one a year ago.
However, Missouri does have 10 offensive starters returning, so perhaps it can make a bowl game for the first time since the 2014 season.
Herbstreit is breaking down his surprise teams, picks and other awards on “The Herbies” on ESPN2 on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET.
