Kirby Smart confirms: Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason will not play at Notre Dame

ATHENS — Jacob Eason will not play this week at Notre Dame after being diagnosed with a sprained knee ligament, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said on Monday.

Eason will not require surgery, Smart added, and said the team felt “fortunate” that Eason’s injury wasn’t worse.

“We expect a full recovery this season,” Smart said, saying he wasn’t sure the length of time he’ll be out. “It’ll be week to week.”

Eason was injured on the second play of Georgia’s third drive, on a late hit after scrambling out of bounds. The sophomore quarterback finished the game 1-for-3, the lone completion for four yards.

When Fromm entered, Georgia went on to take a 31-0 lead, with Fromm going 10-for-15 for 143 yards and one touchdown pass.

A five-star prospect a year ago, Eason started all but one game last year for Georgia, finishing the year with 2,430 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but only a 55.1 completion percentage.

“I’m just disappointed for Jacob, because of how hard he worked, how much he had grown … and he didn’t get a chance to showcase that the other day,” Smart said.

Fromm, who was a four-star prospect on the 247Sports Composite, enrolled this January out of Houston County High School in Warner Robins. He immediately drew raves for his leadership skills and quick ability to pick up the offense.

The only other scholarship quarterback on Georgia’s roster is senior Brice Ramsey, who entered in the fourth quarter last Saturday and threw two interceptions. Ramsey has appeared in 20 games at quarterback over the past three seasons, though with no starts.
