AUBURN, Ala. — The biggest question around Auburn football in this SEC Championship Game week is undoubtedly the status of running back Kerryon Johnson.

The SEC’s top running back injured his shoulder in the second half of Auburn’s 26-14 win against Alabama on Saturday. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey described the injury situation as day-to-day Sunday.

Johnson wouldn’t say definitively if he would play against Georgia this weekend but that he’s doing everything he can to get to that point.

“I’m working this week to get back to as healthy as I can be,” Johnson said. “We’ve been working for this game for a long time… I’m doing everything I can to get back out there on the field.”

Auburn senior linebacker Tre’ Williams — who fought through a shoulder injury to play Saturday against Alabama — would put Johnson’s chances of playing in the SEC Championship Game at 100 percent.

“Oh, yeah,” Williams said. “Kerryon’s really tough, man… He’s going to play. This is the first SEC Championship Game we’ve been able to play in.”

Johnson’s backfield partner, sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham, feels the same way.

“I know how much this means to Kerryon to play in a game like, to be in a game like this,” Stidham said. “I feel very confident.”

As for Johnson himself, he feels confidence that he can power through the recovery process this week and play in his first SEC Championship Game.

“I’m confident in myself,” Johnson said. “I never count myself out. I’ll never count myself out until I’m officially counted out.”
