LEXINGTON, Ky. — College basketball’s early signing period for the Class of 2018 is under way and the actual 2017-18 college basketball season begins Friday. Host Curtis Burch and beat writer Kyle Tucker set the stage for both on the latest episode of Wildcat Country, your daily Kentucky podcast presented by SEC Country.
- We talk about this piece, in which Scout.com/247Sports recruiting analyst Evan Daniels weighed in on each of the Cats’ 2018 targets — including two new ones, 4-star guard Tyler Herro and 5-star center Moses Brown. Kentucky is in good shape with both and Daniels thinks Herro could be John Calipari’s next commitment.
- Can this year’s young Wildcats win it all? Kyle discusses his column in which he provides three things that must happen — and three that must not — for UK to hang championship banner No. 9 in Rupp Arena’s rafters.
- The ongoing Jarred Vanderbilt saga made the must list (he must play and stay healthy) and the must-avoid list (he can’t get hurt again). The 6-foot-9 McDonald’s All-American freshman might be the single most important piece to a Final Four run.
- What a bummer all of this preseason bad news in college basketball has been. Now Auburn and Alabama have both suspended star players while they sort out eligibility issues. The Tigers officially fired Chuck Person after his federal indictment. The SEC’s season of great promise is in peril before it even starts. Elsewhere, Georgia Tech coach (and former Calipari assistant) Josh Pastner had a jilted former friend put him on blast about impermissible benefits to players and UCLA had three players (including a Big Baller) arrested for shoplifting on a hoops trip to China. Kyle and Curtis bemoan the dark cloud under which this season will be played.
