Kentucky football: Xavier Peters is committed, but ‘buckle up and watch the show’

Xavier Peters committed to Kentucky on the Fourth of July, and his decision has been in question ever since. The 4-star outside linebacker quickly took down his commitment tweet, and a day later he tweeted that he still had things to think about.

There was speculation that he de-committed, but Scout.com Ohio recruiting expert Bill Greene said that was just “Xavier being Xavier.”

SEC Country caught up with Greene for his thoughts on Peters and how his roller coaster of a recruitment might unfold.

“This one could be a fun ride to signing day,” Greene said. “I’ve covered a lot of Florida kids over the years and his recruitment is probably going to be similar to a typical Florida kid. When you get the facts, you’ll know you’ve got him, but it may be a bumpy road along the way.”

For now, Peters remains committed to the Wildcats. That’s what he told Greene two weeks ago. The Lakota West (West Chester, Ohio) star cited proximity as something working in Kentucky’s favor. He said he doesn’t want his mom and grandparents to be too far away.

Peters also is keeping his recruitment open despite his commitment. He told Greene he plans on visiting USC, Texas, Oregon, Penn State and Tennessee.

Peters is the 257th-ranked prospect in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He’s a top-10 prospect in Ohio and the No. 18 outside linebacker in the country. Peters is Kentucky’s fourth-highest ranked commit in the 2018 class, and while his commitment doesn’t seem to be firm, Greene thinks the Wildcats are still in the best spot to land him.

“I think [Kentucky] makes sense for him,” Greene said. “He talked about his mother, his grandparents — that makes a lot of sense for him. But I also think he enjoys the limelight. I think he is going to enjoy these five visits, so there’s always a chance someone could sway him.

“When they’re on campus a lot of things can happen positively for a school, so we’ll see.”

Peters’ recruitment has been entertaining so far, and it might get better.

“I’m gonna buckle up and watch the show,” Greene said.
