The decision came down between Kentucky and Ohio State, and the Buckeyes came out on top in the battle for top 2018 wide receiver target Blue Smith.
The Dayton, Ohio, native announced his commitment on Sunday morning. Smith joins an Ohio State class that already ranked No. 1 in the country even before Smith’s commitment. Smith, a 4-star wide receiver, is the No. 119 prospect in the nation and 4th-ranked Ohio prospect, according to 247Sports.
Kentucky was long in the running to land Smith, but of the 17 predictions logged in 247Sports’ crystal ball, all 17 picked Ohio State to land the 4-star prospect.
Smith is a massive target in the passing game at 6-foot-5 and 198 pounds. Ohio State originally recruited him as a tight end, but Smith made it clear he wants to play wide receiver at the next level. The Buckeyes then changed course and promised Smith he could play receiver.
“Urban Meyer had him down and basically told him, ‘Look, if you stay in the 200, 205 range that you’re at now, even if you get to 210-215 and you keep your speed up, you’re a wide receiver,’” Scout.com Ohio recruiting analyst Bill Greene told SEC Country. “‘Now, you get in the 225 to 235 range, and we will move you to tight end.’ When they clarified that, I think that resonated with the kid.”
Smith would’ve given Kentucky its 19th commitment in the 2019 class. The Wildcats class is ranked 18th in the country, according to 247Sports.
