Kentucky football: Six Wildcats named to coaches’ preseason All-SEC teams

Junior linebackers Jordan Jones and Denzil Ware were named second-team defense.

Junior tight end C.J. Conrad and sophomore running back Benny Snell were named third-team offense.

Junior safety Mike Edwards landed on third-team defense while senior kicker Austin MacGinnis made third-team special teams.

The coaches’ All-SEC selections come after just three Kentucky players were selected All-SEC at the conference’s media days.

Jones was named first-team defense last season after leading the SEC with 5.7 solo tackles per game. He finished the season with a team-high 109 tackles and 15.5 tackles for loss. Ware was second on the team in both sacks and tackles for loss last season.

Conrad hauled in 19 catches for 262 yards and four touchdowns a year ago and figures to be a bigger part of the offense in 2017. Snell set six Kentucky freshman running records last season: most rushing touchdowns in a game (4), most rushing yards by a freshman (1,091), most rushing touchdowns by a freshman (13), most total touchdowns by a freshman (13), most 100-yard rushing games (5) and most rushing yards by a freshman in a single game (192).

Edwards’ 100 tackles last season led all SEC defensive backs. He twice intercepted Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson in Kentucky’s win over Louisville last season. MacGinnis, who notched the game-winning kick against Louisville and Mississippi State, converted 16 of 19 field goals in 2016. He needs 48 more points to become the schools’ all-time scoring leader.

Kentucky opens the season Sept. 2 at Southern Miss.
