Kentucky basketball recruiting: Keldon Johnson and James Wiseman playing in Marshall County Hoop Fest

Several top college basketball prospects will be in western Kentucky this weekend for the annual Marshall County Hoop Fest. Kentucky 2018 signee Keldon Johnson will be among the participants, as well as top 2019 target James Wiseman.

Johnson, one of three Kentucky signees, is the 11th-ranked player in the 2018 class. NBA superstar Kevin Durant recently broke down Johnson’s film.

“If you need a scorer, man, this guy’s who you need,” Durant said of Johnson.

Johnson’s signature has been finalized, and the Wildcats are leading the pursuit for Wiseman. The 6-foot-11 power forward is the No. 2 prospect in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports composite. One hundred percent of the Crystal Ball predictions have Wiseman picking Kentucky.

Wiseman was offered a scholarship in mid-September. Kentucky coach John Calipari visited Wiseman on Tuesday.

Wiseman was initially ruled ineligible to play high school basketball this season because of a relationship with Penny Hardaway, who coached Wiseman’s AAU team and Memphis East — the high school Wiseman transferred to for his junior season. However, a temporary restraining order was granted to allow Wiseman and another teammate to play at least until their Dec. 7 court hearing .

There’s been speculation that Wiseman might reclassify to join the 2018 group.

Another 2019 Kentucky target, 5-star small forward D.J. Jeffries, will also play in Hoop Fest. Jeffries, from Olive Branch, Miss., is the No. 18 prospect in the 2019 class. He picked up a Kentucky offer in September and Calipari recently watched him play, according to reports.

Other names to watch this weekend: Oregon signee Bol Bol, Adair County point guard Zion Harmon and Lexington Catholic’s Zan Payne — the son of Kentucky assistant coach Kenny Payne. Zan Payne could be a potential walk-on for the Wildcats, according to the Herald-Leader.

Other notable names in Hoop Fest include uncommitted 5-star forward Jordan Brown and 4-star Kansas signee David McCormack from the 2018 class. Center Charles Bassey and small forward Precious Achiuwa, a pair of 5-star prospects in the 2019 class, will also play.
