Justin Rogers becomes TCU’s 1st 5-star recruit ever

The TCU recruiting class for 2018 has 19 commits, headlined by 5-star quarterback Justin Rogers from Bossier City (La.) Parkway.

TCU has just a few spots left in a class that will likely finish with around 25 signees. Rogers has been the catalyst of the class, with 13 players committing to the Horned Frogs since he committed at the end of May.

Here’s an early look at where things stand for the 2018 class.

Where the 2018 TCU recruiting class ranks

TCU’s recruiting class is ranked No. 21 in the nation and No. 3 in the Big 12. Three of the Frogs’ commits are 4-star recruits.

Rogers was promoted to a 5-star ranking in the 247Sports Composite this week. He is now TCU’s first 5-star recruit since recruiting services began tracking player rankings.

The quarterback got the ratings bump despite missing most of this season following a major knee injury. However, evaluators were impressed enough by Rogers at The Opening finals over the summer to grant him that coveted fifth star.

It’s a major milestone for the Frogs, who are seeing an unprecedented level of recruiting success under coach Gary Patterson. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sonny Cumbie also played a major role in wooing Rogers and his family and winning his commitment over in-state powerhouse LSU.

Institutional obstacles such as history and school size will probably keep TCU from ever recruiting at the level of Texas or Oklahoma. But for the Frogs to now be demonstrating the ability to steal select blue-chip prospects away from traditional powers is incredible, especially given that just a few years ago they were usually battling SMU and Colorado State on the recruiting trail.

Rogers will take his final official visit to TCU the weekend of Dec. 16, the last weekend before the early signing period. He is then expected to sign with the Frogs and enroll early. Depending on how his recovery goes, he could compete with Shawn Robinson for TCU’s starting quarterback job next season.

TCU recruiting: Top uncommitted targets

5-star WR Terrace Marshall Jr., Parkway (Bossier City, La.)

Rogers’ teammate and the nation’s No. 1 receiver, Terrace Marshall would be TCU’s first 5-star commit ever if he chose the Frogs. TCU wasn’t in his top four schools, but reports indicate the Frogs aren’t completely out of the hunt. Rogers and his family have been campaigning for Marshall to pick TCU. LSU is considered the favorite to land him.

4-star WR Jaylen Waddle, Episcopal (Bellaire, Texas)

The Frogs are very high on Waddle, who could be the best receiver in the country besides Marshall. He’s the nation’s No. 67 overall prospect, but TCU would have to beat out national powerhouses Alabama and Florida State for his commitment.

4-star WR Lawrence Keys, McDonogh 35 (New Orleans, La.)

If TCU wants another blue-chip receiver in this class, it may have the best chance at Keys. The 4-star wideout has the Frogs in his top six. TCU may be content with the receivers it has, but any of these three would be great additions.

Unrated OT Willie Allen, Tyler J.C. (Tyler, Texas)

Willie Allen was a 4-star recruit coming out of high school when he committed to LSU. He transferred to Tyler J.C. during the offseason after the Tigers blocked him from transferring to TCU. The Frogs have yet to offer Allen. But if they do, they can sell him on the chance to contribute immediately. TCU will be losing four of its five starting offensive linemen after this season.
