Joel Lanning first FBS player in 11 years to record sack, INT, fumble recovery, rush TD, and pass TD in same season

As the fan voting for the Paul Hornung Award draws to a close, the Iowa State athletic department let loose with a staggering stat.

Linebacker/quarterback Joel Lanning, who is up for the award, is the first FBS player in over a decade to record a sack, a pick, a fumble recovery, a rushing touchdown, and a passing touchdown in the same season.

There won’t be another player quite like Joel Lanning in a long time. No one thought he was a bad quarterback in years past, just that his skill set wasn’t NFL caliber, which is fine. Few thought he would take to his position change in the offseason like he did. He’s sincerely one of the top linebackers in the conference after one offseason’s worth of practices.

That’s an extremely hard feat to pull off, going from one of the least physically intensive positions to one of the most. Lanning has been nothing short of an inspiration for Iowa State, and he’s having the year he deserves.
