GAINESVILLE, Fla. — After playing both redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks and graduate transfer Malik Zaire in Florida’s season-opening loss to Michigan on Saturday, coach Jim McElwain said he’d take a look at the position before deciding who to go with in Week 2.
Speaking Monday, McElwain said Franks will remain the starter against Northern Colorado.
“We’ll go back with Feleipe. That was kind of the plan,” he said. “I think both guys did some things, some things they’d like back. After the game we talked about that and that was kind of part of what we want too. We’ll take a look at him going this week”
Franks finished 5-of-9 passing for 75 yards before being pulled from the game in the third quarter of the 33-17 loss after losing a fumble.
Zaire came in and finished 9-of-17 for 106 yards while taking 5 sacks.
Neither quarterback was helped by the Gators’ porous offensive line play, and McElwain admitted he also considered turning to veteran QB Luke Del Rio at one point during the loss.
“It was one of those things we were actually going to go with Luke there in the 2-minute situation. That would have probably been the one thing (I’d change), and yet we just felt (Zaire) gave us an opportunity there to maybe get out of some of trouble that we were in. This is going to be one of those things we go and we get better at.”
